get something that fits you. You have to ride it you will want to be comfortable on it. Make sure both feet are flat on the ground when you come to a stop. Handle bars are in a comfortable position not to high or low and they shouldn't be turned in a position which makes your wrists uncomfortable. For you first bike I wouldn't suggest anything over 600cc.

they used to scare me until i worked at a motorcycle shop. the course is offered everywhere. it cost about $400 for the entire weekend but then you don't have to take the tests at the dmv.

Here in Alabama our driver's license is already covered for a motorcycle so there are no test to be taken.. at least not that I know of. But if I do break down and get one I will defininitely be taking a class since I have no clue about how to ride a bike!

I would get a ninja 500. Its a good relable bike. cheap to insure, cheap to buy, cheap to fix and a great starter bike with lots of power and up right seating. nice to see more riders out there.
