Topic: Stolen Merchandise

My daughter and her friend went on a bit of a shoplifting spree and as a result there is quite a bit of stuff in my house. She finally got arrested for retail theft when they tried it again on Friday; and in an unrelated incident wound up being sent to a mental hospital Friday night. I don't want this merchandise in my house. When she got arrested at WalMart on Saturday, I mentioned it to the security people there; and I mentioned it to the police officer. Seems like they can't take the stuff back or charge them for it on my say-so. They were not actually caught stealing it and I can't prove it.

So what do I do? I was thinking of waiting until she gets out of the hospital and then making her take it all to the Goodwill (that is, if she ends up coming back home). I don't want her living in my house, and enjoying her stolen goods.

They stole - in one trip - a microwave, a vaccuum cleaner, rugs, curtains, towels, bedspreads, a chair, a large trash can, a 32 gallon tote, bathroom stuff, candles, etc.

What would you do?

wow.. with the items they took, seem's like she was stocking up to move out?

I personally would take them all to goodwill.. I wouldn't let her touch the items again.

That was my first thought, but then I wondered if it would be beneficial for her to have to donate it herself.

they were fixing up my basement to move down there. But I threw the friend out and then my daughter went to the hospital so I am glad to say they never got to enjoy their ill gotten stuff.

You can go two ways.... get rid of it all so when she gets back she will be shocked thats its gone
Or make her bring it to goodwill
Sounds like shes headed down a real bad path.... thought about not allowing here back?

Thank goodness they caught them the second time. They were just filling up carts and walking out.

oooor you could have HER return it to walmart and tell them she stole it before she went in the hospital... have her take it to the store manager!!!!

donate it to a charity if you don't want it and the cops can't use it as evidence

yes..very seriously..I don't want to just take her from a psyche ward and toss her on the street though..I am looking for a halfway house, or group home or something. She needs to take meds, etc. and she won't be able to if she is living on the streets.

I mentioned to the managers at WalMart that we had this merchandise and they were not interested.

It's great that she's seeking therapy.. then I would say she needed to find some new friends. Good luck to you..that's a tough situation.

I work in that field.... look into pyschiatric inpatient facilities... they will keep her there and get her stable on meds then find a group home/ halfway house for her.

I know.. strange, isn't it? We have people standing by our Walmart doors that check receipts. (most days)
