This story will no doubt date me. It took place a long time ago. When
I was in high school one of my friends worked part time as a Telephone
Operator. In those days if you made a person to person call, the
operator handled it and made sure the party you were calling was on the
line. Your phone would ring and the operator would say, "I have a
person to person call for Mr. or Mrs. and the name of the person" If
the person was not there the calling party did not have to pay for the
call.

I went by the phone company one evening to pick up Judy after work. She
came out of the place laughing hysterically with tears running down her
face. She said she had just handled a person to person call. She rang
the number and said "I have a long distance person to person call for
Mr. John Smith" and the little boy that answered the phone said "he is
in the bathroom washing his balls with a toothbrush" and Judy said you
could hear the mother in the background yelling "GOLF BALLS, GOLF BALLS"
