What kind of something? Something for school? If so, take her shopping for a cool backpack, packed with all the supplies she will need, and a lunch box. You could get her some books to read over the summer to improve her skills. I'd stay away from clothes, though, they grow so fast, what you buy now probably won't fit at the end of the summer.

If you go with the backpack idea, slip some notes in it reminding her how much you love her and are wishing her well in the coming year. She'll love finding those flowerforyou

Sorry Amber, couldn't help it!! Wait until she is there and feel it out!!! Then it will be truly known what she may want or need. No rush!! flowerforyou

The cool backpack with her favorite color or character is always a winner, especially since she's going to be a big girl and going to school. Also, maybe a lunch box to match???
Good luck and have fun!

I agree with this, at 17 my daughter and I still go school clothes shopping for her together. Make this something you the two of you do every year. She will always look forward to this time with you.happy flowerforyou

I think some nice flowers and a bag of candy when you pick her up flowerforyou
...then maybe you can get her a backpack she likes and fill it with princess items for school...You know, something she will use all year and remember how special the shopping experience was with you (i.e. pencils, hair ties, folders)

...If that doesn't work, Shoes always won my heart

Good luck

Fall and starting school is a long way away for a five year old. Buy and inexpensive tea party set, some crayons, stickers and paper, and some slice and bake cookies. Let her talk and pretend play planning and haveing a tea with you. It is a perfect way to review introduceing your self to new people and polite table manners but keep it light and fun. Five year olds love to play dress up. If you go to a thrift shop and buy some party clothes or hats you can have a big time pretending. Keep a high speed film out door camera to snap some pictures so you can send her home with a photo album of your happy time together. You daughter is coming to spend time with you not be dragged around shopping for things that may or may not go over with the custodial parent. Word to the wise what may be hot for back packs in one community may be forbidden in your child's school. If you want to relate to your child about starting school give her a picture of you from your early school days.
