For those interested in helping me out, I am looking for patriotic songs to play (hopefully tomorrow, if not then fourth of july) on a radio station I dj for (http://wolf-radio-network.com/).

I am putting together a specific show of patriotic songs, old and new with some background information on key songs (like the star-spangeld banner; look for my next post).

What I need help with is finding songs as far back as the colonial days, wehn we first seperated from England. So far I have founf a lot of instrumental, but I can only play so much instrumental, lol. I really need names of songs that have lyrics in them and can be traced through the history of the United States. I have no problem with current day songs, but anything prior to, say 1980, I am having a problem locating. So if you could email me with a list of songs, or keywords to search with, I would appreciate it immensely.

I have been singing this song for some years. I know that Dwight Yokum and Ralph Stanley have recorded it, but I'm not sure how old the song is. It has been around a while, as I have seen and heard many different versions. It mentions poppies, though, which are associated with World War I.

There is an informative site about that- http://www.poppies.ws/poppies/the-red-poppy.html

I'll try to think of more songs! Lyrics follow:

Down Where The River Bends

Its hard to keep tears out of my eyes
For this might be our last goodbye
Our country calls you to defend a great land
So do your part just like a man

Down where the river bends
With God's help we'll meet again
Under the same old sycamore tree
Proud of each other and the land of the free

I'll go down to the ocean blue
And get as close as I can to you
Though the ocean wide may keep us apart
It won't keep you, dear out of my heart

If the worst should happen, and the poppies should wave
Over your far and lonely grave
All the rest of my life I'll spend in prayer
I'll meet you in heaven, there'll be no war there
