Topic: Longshore Union Strikes Against War | |
---|---|
Thursday, May Day, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union will declare an eight-hour strike to protest the war in Iraq. Since the ILWU controls every port along the U.S. Pacific Coast, including Seattle and Tacoma, this strike demonstrates the collective power of workers willing to use it.
The ILWU is demanding “an immediate end to the war and occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the Middle East.” Although the majority of Americans repeatedly have expressed their desire to end the war, President Bush has not obliged us, so it drags on. Because our leaders refuse to listen, ILWU members are taking the next logical step for workers: Strike. For those unfamiliar, the ILWU is perhaps the most militant and politicized worker organization in the nation. It operates in one of the most important sectors of the world economy — marine transport — and, thus, is in a strategic location to put peace above profits. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/361087_mayday.html |

A very similar workers outrage over some of FDR's foreign policy ideas was proposed by the Workers Progressive Party back in the late 1930's. There were a few demonstrations and a few strikes to try to enforce their beliefs. Luckily, they failed to get their opinions followed. Just as a side note, the Workers Progressive party was the official name of the American Communist party. Today, the Democrat Party is using the term "Progressive Party" to describe themselves. Funny coicidence, isn't it.

"thus, is in a strategic location to put peace above profits" And also put socialism above liberty. I never saw him state the Patriot Act was liberating. Why do you want to put words in his mouth? I will say, however, that the Patriot Act saves lives. |

why do you fear communists so much? wont the free market take care of us enough to maintain the civil order? I would think in a free and open society all viewpoints would be welcome. I thought all that red baiting went out of style with Joe Mcarthy

Or the fact that the patriot act helped them stop a group of people from blowing up the Brooklyn Bridge.
Unless you are dealing with people outside the then your liberties are not really being touched at all. |

I will say, however, that the Patriot Act saves lives. And I never called you a socialists. Look at who is posting before you finger point. He was refering to ILWU. He never claimed they were anything, he said they were in a position to put socialism before liberty. Just because someone is in a position to do something doesn't mean they will. You then went off topic and mentioned the Patriot Act. BTW I am not looking for your respect. I do not feel that I need to try to earn respect from people on an internet forum. I come here because I enjoy it. Think what you will of me. |
