Topic: Candid Confession | |

I have a confession to make to the world. I don't love music. In fact, I'd be hard pressed even to claim that I like music. Oh, sure, there are particular pieces that entertain me. In fact, I find music to be a pleasant background for a lot of activities. I almost never listen to music for its own sake though. And you can forget about an emotional response. Maybe to the lyrics, but never to the music.
It's a relatively recent revelation to me that this makes me an oddity. Apparently, almost everybody else finds music to be very moving. I guess in compensation, I was blessed with a deep emotional connection to words and language. I find the shape and sound of certain words to be very evocative. |

I'm 49 years old and you are the first person that I've ever known or heard of that doesn't like music. How could the fact that this is an oddity be a recent revelation to you?

No music?? That can't be. Music does it all. I never used to like classical until someone suggested listening to it in a different perspective. Classical music is a lot like making love. The rise and fall of the tempo, speeding up, slowing down. That person was right. It's also great to make love to. Music can be used in so many different ways. To relax, to take out aggression (hard rock to scrub the bathroom floor). Approach it from another angle.

There is even therapy that involves music. It helps geriatric patients that have dementia and many more other kinds of patients.

Wow? No music, eh?
I mean, I am fond of words myself, but mine are more written words, more so than spoken. Music, however, is something completly different. It can soothe the soul, and do so much more. Give it another try! |

Yes, you are on the rarer side for sure, not to even "like" music. But its not impossible. Music is a very common thread in humanity with the beat hitting common cords in people in general. You are just one of the rare ones that simply do not have those cords. Just as I do not care about many types of "art" Certain peices I very much like, but most, especially styles like "contemporary" do absolutely nothing for me. Music however, is a great love of mine. rarely do i even listen to most of the lyrics. It's the music that can flow through me. Many, especially in women, express this kind of feeling through dance. I'm not the greatest dancer around by far, but can hold my own. My outlet is playing it. And when the music is "flowing" through me, its an incredible emotional release. Not many things better in this world for me. But to each thier own...we all share common threads...and others not so common. So enjoy those things that make you happy in life. |

You make me ashamed to be a part of the human race!
But then again I'm not completly human anyway. What the h*ll, you make my brain hurt. |
