One of my favorite things are the blooms on a dogwood tree, Yesterday I went for a run, and they weren't open. Today they were.

Today would have been my mom's 76th birthday.

She gave me the gift of beauty today.which will probably be followed by a swift kick in the ass about something later...laugh

Dogwoods are beautiful, I agree. My Mom has one in her yard that was planted by my oldest brother when he was about six, 48 years ago, and it can take your breath away when in bloom.

But, yeah, look out----Mom will pass on another message soon too!!laugh laugh

This time of year is beautiful with the trees blooming and knowing summer is around the corner..My mom passed away in 1996 and always loved this time of year.

Lily,

The legend of the dogwood, is that at the time of the crucifixion of Jesus, The Dogwood tree was mighty as the oak, The cross, was made from the dogwood tree, While our beloved savior (for those of us who believe) was nailed to the cross, he sensed pity from the wood, and and said from now on..the Dogwood would be small and crooked so it could never again be used to make a cross.
The blossom shall be in the shape of a cross, with two long and two short leaves, and on the edge of each pedal shall be an impression of the nails, the center shall be a crown of thorns, blood stained so that all remember.

If you have ever looked closely at the blossoms, they are exactly as described. Didn't mean to turn this religious, just to let you know that some of those blossoms may just be for all of us, in remembrance of our savior, and our loved ones with wings. Nice thought flowerforyou

I personally am not christian, by my mother was a VERY devout Baptist woman, who at her funeral people were lined up outside the funeral home and around the corner. Although outspoken like me, she was loved by many many people.

Again, although I am not christian, she was and would be very happy you told me this story.

Thank you.

We had 2 in the front yard as a kid, and they only do well if they are able to cross polinate.

They do well as an under planting to larger trees, In the south, in full sun, they do not thrive, dappled shade and moisture is best. They do put on an awesome display, gotta love spring!
