I would be totally honest, as many of the ppl here require for their relationships. I would tell her it was ugly as **** and that I would not have anything that disgusting and ugly in my house, and that I hate it, then tell her I regret hurting her feelings, but, absolute honesty is the best policy?

gives you an awful looking ceramic something for X-mas. You know she is going to expect to see it when she comes over. What do you do? Smash it on the floor in front of her so she can expect not to expect to see it the next time she visits!
