I stopped on the road the other day
To watch three does graze.
One half grown fawn from the spring
And two older, full grown deer
They picked among the remants
Of a corn field harvested last fall
Unplowed, waiting for the coming spring.
As a watched their browsing in the fading light
They slowly crept back to the tree line.
Not alarmed quiet enough to run, but unnerved nonetheless
At my strange behavior.
I took in the scene, wondering.
Who else would have stopped,
Taken the sixty seconds of tranquility
And then felt regret and disturbing the herd's peace?
