What's even worse is say when an ex contacts a new love interest. I have known someone this happened to. The guy was separated with his wife and both began dating other people. One night in a drunken fueled vindictive act the wife messaged the new girlfriend through facebook saying "I hope you're enjoying spending time with MY husband" Needless to say the new girlfriend did not want to be in the middle of any of that and they split.
