If the software & drivers are gone, first thing to do is identify the soundcard, (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061125033121AAs7jJ9) that might help.

did you physically delete the sound software or has the icon disappeared from the menu bar? tried system restore for a start?
