I sew and never thought of myself as a geek. Back then it was norm to be able to sew I guess. Never sewed for profit either.

I made a few outfits in my twenties that I wore and liked altering patterns to design something I thought looked great. To me it did too! Sewed also some of my daughters baby clothes. As well and like you Navygirl, I got into sewing costumes and made a lot for my husband and I and daughter for Halloween dances, or trick or treating when she was in her childhood.

My mom sewed most of my clothes while going through elementary and junior high school (grades 1 - 9). She was very creative in home design as well sewing curtains, and craft items etc. I learnt from her. She did not sew for profit either.

Now a days, I basically use the sewing machine for clothing repairs or for a home project. Last projects were patio door (summer) sheers and (winter) curtains which I alternate seasonally.

As for today, I do not sew much for I have other interests that take up my time and enjoy more.
