in my opinion, to lie to a person or not does not depends on right or wrong but depends of how much the target can handle.

- say: "i love your new dog" vs "your dog is butt ugly"

a doctor tells his patient

- "you're doing great, you'll get better soon"
vs
- "you'll be dead in a month"

if it's harmless and it makes people feel better then it's not a lie.

sometimes you gotta try and listen to what people DON'T say.
say "hi, how are you?" depends on the person, situation ...etc. has different meaning. it could be

- uh, hey it's that guy...maybe i should say something
- hey, haven't seen that guy for a long time, i wonder how he is
- arg, it's that guy again...oopse he saw me, "hi, how are you?"
- err, it's weird if we i don't say anything.
- hm, i want to get to know this person. if i say "hi" he says "hello" conversation is finished, "how are you?" will keep the conversation going longer.

words are just words, they're tools we use. a tool can be used by the right person/wrong person, the right way/ wrong way. words don't matter much to me, intention is what really counts and is the hardest to determine.

i get what you mean, lex. im the same, if a person asked me an honest question he/she deserves an honest answer.

but sometimes you got to explain your point/ ease people in.
