Your head would explode, you would go mad.
From Die Hard: Live Free or Die Hard:
Matt Farrell : [to McClane] If that guy knew half the shi(a)t that I know, his fuzzy little head would explode.

I once wrote a flashfic story about a comet which hits the Sun and initiates a change in the radiation spectrum that when filtered thru our atmosphere we could see people's emotional states like an colored aura around their bodies.
A haze of color surrounding them with shades of light or dark indicating intensity.

You could 'read' how they are feeling by the color and intensity.
In the story, you could also see the emotional states of plants and other animals.
The only places where you did not see them is in places where sunlight or moonlight couldn't hit you or your eyes. (A dark room at night)

I think that "power' would be much more revealing than the power to know thoughts.
I imagine many people would be a sorta 'tootie-fruity' with baseline color indicating a baseline emotional state with other less intense emotional states over-laid onto it and constantly changing.

So if love were say, blue. Someone with a blue baseline is emotionally grounded based on love. If red were, anger. Someone with a red baseline would be emotionally grounded in anger and so on...

It would certainly be interesting to see how society would adapt.

I think reading human brains would be psychotic and mundane at the same time.
Like: look at that shiny thing, don't trip over that, can I sneak a fart, where's that thing, what was that dream last week, is my breath OK, how can X say that, do I have my keys, there's a hole in my sock, how much cash will I need, is the timer set, someone's cooking bacon, remember a bit of a song, where's my coffee, do I need my jacket, laugh at joke, don't jam fingers, what do I feel like for lunch, fuel's gone up again, look at that idiot, how much is that, B.S., am I being John Malcovitch, what was that, I like that tune, etc.. Scattered like a RAM, but coherent to the decoder.

A nice lady did read my mind, she looked like a future girlfriend, and told me she had just met her life partner, just before telling me my life story, accurately, and still accurate after nearly 40 years. Amazing.

I would like to read animals' minds; that would be something new.
They would have real issues, not stupid human 'worries'.
