Topic: Into Space, how would you feel?

I know many easily say, I'd go!! But that's once you're in space. That could be cool, however, there's the first part...
Watch the beginning of Apollo 13 or similar...
Getting into a suit like that, I'd get claustrophobic with such a helmet even, hihi.
Then in that lift to the entrance of the rocket, REALLY high up... I'd get fear of heights. I got that already, that would make it worse.

Then you scramble into the thing into your seat and get strapped in real tight. Not much space to sit and movement is restricted...
Next this dude closes the door to this piddly tiny cockpit... they countdown... ignition, the whole danged thing shakes and moves, as do you... then finally you feel you go up while the whole thing is still shaking...

Now that part... how would you feel?

For me it's clear, one thing only: "I want to get the feck out!!!! Lemme out!!!"

I'm with you step for step.

When I was a kid, I was enthralled by the idea of space travel. Granted, the larger part of what got me away from it, was the realization that there really isn't anywhere fun to GO in space (yet).

But it's also true that as you say, the process to GET off the planet (though it has improved a lot from the time of Apollo 13) isn't any fun at all.

I'd go for sure! I'm not afraid of heights and have been on many small airplanes that were pretty bumpy rides. About the only thing that might bother me is the helmet... but you get to take that off once your in space, and the excitement in the whole thing would take my mind off it.

I think the getting into space, say going to the ISS would be the worst part, physically gruelling (especially at my age) and unpleasant. Getting back to Earth could be dangerous as well. No one has died in space yet, only in trying to get there or return. Given the opportunity, I'd do it in an instant. We were born to go happy

Yes, like Igor says, getting OFF the planet isn't much fun...
nor is returning...
That narrow corridor of re-entry... hoping the heat-shields work and stuff...

I just watched the real re-entry of the Apollo 13 capsule, it landing in the ocean.
The time it takes from touching the ocean to them getting you out of that tin can is like forever.
I'd go nuts inside, hahaha.
Much feel like wrenching open the door, screaming "GEMME OUTTA HERE NOW!!!" laugh

When Britain landed on the moon in 1963 they didn't need much oxygen and the spaceship was quite spacious.
See movie : 'first men in the moon' tells the true story.
Wasn't until later in the 1960s that nasa made there spaceships a lot smaller.

Ok ok, I made some of that up laugh
Great old movie though, and to the op. nope noway

I would feel scared of course but I love anything to do with space, the planets, stars, astronomy, ufo's. And that fear would outweigh any fear of heights I would have.

Sorry sparkling crystal, you meant the other Igor. Well, I do have terrible eyesight and for a number of reasons I'm often considered to be an Igor laugh

how would you feel?

Possibly like I was a passenger in the world's worst uber ride going nowhere in particular except "up that way."

Hopefully the astronaut pay is out of this world.
I'm thinking more of the grueling part of getting into shape, testing, constantly being prodded and probed by doctors, always having some control freak talking in my ear, and cameras constantly watching and monitoring everything I do and feel.

You do know it's not like a roller-coaster, right?

I would probably feel it's about the same.
Or at least putting on an old timey diving suit with the big metal helmet on a jet powered rollercoaster.
Disney would charge you for that, the u.s. government will pay you.
Maybe that's one way they can save tax payer money. Have adrenalin junkies pay the gov't to go into space and work on stuff, then they get the book and movie rights for their trip.

Bring on the sci fi book/movie space travel where I can just go into my garage, get into my space r.v., and take off to another planet to go explore stuff and wrestle lizard people.

If, there were an actual destination, that might change
my mind about going.
But, for the timebeing, I'll pass.

I mean, It's bad enough, to get stuck on a flight from
Dallas to New York, next to someone who won't shut up.
That flight is only a few hours.
I don't even want to begin to imagine, a months or years long
journey, stuck in a seat next to a motor mouth.

laugh

You likely won't sit next to it but as Ciretom says, you will have one in your ear non-stop, haha.

He raises some good points, that voice in your ear, being watched and monitored all the time and so on.
I think I'd get a little paranoid after a while.

Would it be possible then, to jam an icepick into the speaker?
Run a straightpin through the co-ax?
Or, at least, remove the earbud?

laugh

And, the video surveillance? Just 'yuck'.

Yes, the video surveillance would do my head in too.
I've lived with a man for 10 years who felt it was okay to put up cameras and not tell anyone, including in our bedroom noway
I couldn't believe it, luckily I saw right away when I got home after a weekend workshop.
I didn't feel safe in my own home anymore, knowing how small webcams can be these days, and he knew that too, he was the one who told me.
Even now, 7 years later, I never leave my webcam plugged in, nor leave it sitting on the monitor. It disappears behind a speaker.

Good points Crystal and Rock. The constant yacking of someone in my ear and watching me would be a problem for me, haha.

Although I could take the earpiece out and bring some tape for the camera... I'd still want to go, for the experience.

I'll wait a few lives until there's a proper Enterprise so I don't have to go through all that chit.
